Little Terrarium

There seems to be a bit of terrarium buzz on the internet and in the design world lately, and after seeing this post on Design Sponge I decided I wanted to make my own.

So finally, I did!

A layer of pea gravel, charcoal, spanish moss, and cactus soil.

Finally some of the bits and bobs I find at estate sales have a home!
I bought some cacti to go inside a few planters several months ago, and when I planted them in their new containers, they didn't really fit - I had to break little bits and pieces off to fit them in the pot.  I then put rooting hormone on the pieces which seemed to have worked.  Hopefully I didn't damage their roots in replanting them into this new terrarium.  I did knock off some shoots on the little plant in the back ~uh oh.

A few finds...

Now that I am all moved in (although NOT all unpacked) I have been able to go out looking for little bits and bobs for my shop and for the flea markets I swear I'll get around to doing this summer.  (My gosh the 4th is in less than two weeks - how time flies!).  Aside from all the vintage Christmas I have been stocking up on - which I think I might add to the shop for some sort of Christmas in July sale - I have found a few things of note.

Don't you love the mugs on my new header?  I really want to keep them but I have a hundred mugs so I am thinking I will plant small cacti in them and sell them at the flea market.  I have been experimenting with using unusual things as planters and so far my favorite is this jello mold turned geranium holder:

I also found quite a few vintage carpenters' rulers and have sold a few in my shop already (well, sold one).  I want to find a few more in the coming weekend because I think they would make good 4th of July decorations.  They also seem to be on trend right now, after being featured in Flea Market Style magazine this spring.

Squash!

So I ate the squash pictured a few posts down...and guess what!  It was totally spaghetti squash!

Did I mention I have a garden?

In my friend's sunny backyard, we have a garden.

This is what it looked like about a month after we planted it:

You may ask, is that a boat?  Well yes it is!  Pamela found it in an alley somewhere and it makes a perfect raised garden bed.  In the boat are squash, peppers, eggplant, chard, and cucumbers...  We also have tomatoes and herbs in pots and dahlias and mint planted around the boat.

Here is what it looks like now:

It has really taken over the backyard... There were foot and a half tall grasses surrounding the boat so I went in a pulled them until I got to tired of doing that, so I literally took a pair of scissors and started cutting the grass down to make a path to the boat and around the sides of the boat.

You can see in the picture above that we have two little beds surrounded by upturned glass bottles where we have the dahlias planted.  I had never heard of this before, but apparently they do it a lot in the south.

Chard!

Squash!

It is really great to take home fresh herbs you grew yourself (and mint for mojitos).  Our whole garden is organic, and it is also nice to know I'm not eating any chemicals...
